Yesterday, we studied how David, fleeing from King Saul, went to Ahimelech the priest in Nob and lied about being on a secret mission for the king. Because Ahimelech believed David, he provided him with food and Goliath's sword. Tragically, Saul later learned of Ahimelech's actions, and due to David's deception, a terrible consequence followed.
Discussion Questions:
- How did King Saul learn that Ahimelech had helped David? Who betrayed Ahimelech?
- Describe Saul's reaction when he heard that Ahimelech had assisted David. What does this reveal about Saul's state of mind?
- What command did Saul give to his guards? Why did they refuse to carry it out?
- Who ultimately carried out Saul's terrible order? Describe the extent of the tragedy that unfolded in Nob.
- How do you think David felt when he learned about what happened to Ahimelech and the other priests? Considering his lie led to this, what might he have been feeling?
- What does this chapter emphasize about the seriousness of lying and its potential for far-reaching and devastating consequences?
- Can you think of examples in your own life or in the news where a lie led to negative outcomes for others?
- How can we strive to be truthful in all situations, understanding the potential impact of our words and actions?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, this is a difficult and heartbreaking passage. We see the terrible consequences that can arise from deception. Lord, help us to always value truthfulness and to understand the weight of our words. We pray for forgiveness for the times we have been dishonest and ask for your strength to always choose integrity, even when facing difficult circumstances. Comfort those who suffer due to the dishonesty of others. Amen.
