Yesterday, we learned how God spoke to young Samuel and revealed his judgment on Eli's wicked sons. Despite these warnings, the Israelites continued in their disobedience. They went to war against the Philistines and, facing defeat, decided to bring the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh, believing its presence would guarantee them victory. Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas, accompanied the Ark.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant into battle? What did they seem to believe about its power?
  2. How did the Philistines react when they heard the Ark had arrived? What did they remember about the God of Israel?
  3. Describe what happened during the battle. What was the outcome for the Israelites and for the Ark?
  4. What news did the messenger bring back to Shiloh? How did Eli and the people react to this news?
  5. What happened to Eli when he heard about the Ark being captured? What does this tell us about his priorities?
  6. What were the names of Eli's daughter-in-law's son and what was the significance of the name she gave him?
  7. Why do you think God allowed the Ark to be captured? What lessons can we learn from this event about relying on symbols versus true faith and obedience?
  8. Have you ever relied on something external instead of your relationship with God? How can we ensure our faith is in God himself?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for this story and the lessons it teaches us about true faith. Forgive us when we place our trust in things rather than in you. Help us to understand that your presence is not dependent on objects, but on our obedience and relationship with you. May we always seek to honor you with our lives and trust in your power alone. Amen.
