Following Saul's death, David became king over all of Israel. Recognizing the importance of God's presence, David decided to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, his new capital. The Ark symbolized God's dwelling with His people. However, during the journey, a tragic incident occurred when Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark and was struck dead by God.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did David want to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem? What did the Ark represent to the Israelites?
  2. Describe the initial attempt to move the Ark. How was it transported, and why was this method incorrect according to the Law? (You might need to briefly reference Numbers 4:15)
  3. What happened when Uzzah touched the Ark? Why do you think God reacted so severely?
  4. How did David react to Uzzah's death? What were his initial feelings and what did he do with the Ark afterward?
  5. After a period of time, David made a second attempt to move the Ark. How did he do it differently this time? What precautions were taken?
  6. What does this story teach us about the importance of approaching God with reverence and respect, according to His instructions?
  7. In our lives today, how can we ensure we are honoring God in the way we approach Him and His Word?
  8. What might this story teach us about the difference between good intentions and following God's specific commands?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your holy presence and for the ways you have chosen to reveal yourself to us. We acknowledge that you are a holy God and desire to be honored according to your will. Help us to approach you with reverence and understanding, seeking to follow your instructions in all that we do. May we learn from the story of the Ark and strive to honor you in spirit and in truth. Amen.
