After David's incredible victory over Goliath, he became a celebrated hero in Israel. The people sang praises to him, even more so than to King Saul. Instead of being happy for David's courage and success, Saul became incredibly jealous and suspicious of him. This jealousy began to consume Saul, leading him to view David as a threat rather than a loyal servant.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think the people's praise of David made Saul jealous? What does this reveal about Saul's heart?
  2. How did Saul's feelings towards David change after the victory over Goliath? What were some of the things he did or said that showed his jealousy?
  3. Have you ever felt jealous of someone else's accomplishments or possessions? How did that feeling make you act or think?
  4. How can jealousy harm our relationships and our own well-being?
  5. What are some ways we can overcome feelings of jealousy when they arise?
  6. In this part of the story, we see a contrast between David's humble spirit and Saul's growing insecurity. What can we learn from this contrast?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, we see in this story how jealousy can darken a person's heart and lead to negative actions. Help us to guard our hearts against jealousy and envy. Teach us to celebrate the successes of others and to find our own contentment in you. Amen.
