As the Philistine army gathered against Israel, King Saul's fear grew. He knew that God had departed from him and would no longer answer his prayers through prophets or dreams. Desperate for guidance, Saul sought out a medium at Endor, asking her to bring up the spirit of the deceased prophet Samuel.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why was Saul so afraid in this situation? What had happened to his relationship with God?
  2. Why did Saul seek out a medium, even though he had previously driven them out of the land? What does this show about his desperation?
  3. Describe what happened when the medium called upon Samuel's spirit. What did Samuel say to Saul?
  4. Why do you think God allowed Samuel's spirit to appear to Saul in this way?
  5. What was the message Samuel delivered? How did it affect Saul?
  6. What does this story teach us about seeking guidance from sources other than God?
  7. In what ways might people today try to find answers or comfort in places that don't honor God?
  8. What should we do when we feel distant from God or are facing difficult decisions? Where should we turn for guidance?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word and the lessons it teaches us. We see in this chapter the consequences of turning away from you and seeking guidance elsewhere. Help us to always keep you as our primary source of wisdom and direction. When we feel lost or afraid, remind us to turn to you in prayer and through your Word. May we always honor you in our search for truth and understanding. Amen.
