In the previous chapters, we learned about young Samuel and how God spoke to him. We also saw the downfall of Eli's family. Now, the people of Israel desire a king to lead them, like the other nations around them. Even though God was their true King, He instructed Samuel to anoint a man to rule over them.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Describe Saul as he is first introduced in this chapter. What details are given about his appearance and family?
  2. What was Saul initially doing when he encountered Samuel? How did this seemingly ordinary task lead to a significant turning point in his life?
  3. How did God communicate His plan to Samuel regarding Saul? What does this tell us about how God works?
  4. When Samuel told Saul that he would be the king of Israel, how did Saul react? What does his response reveal about his character at this time?
  5. Why do you think God chose Saul to be the first king of Israel? What qualities might God have seen in him initially?
  6. Have you ever been surprised by an opportunity or responsibility that came your way? How did you feel?
  7. What does this story teach us about God's ability to use ordinary people for extraordinary purposes?
  8. How can we be open to God's plans for our lives, even when they seem unexpected or beyond our own abilities?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for this story of how you chose Saul to be the first king of Israel. We see that you have a plan for each of us, even in the midst of our everyday lives. Help us to be open to your leading and to recognize the opportunities you place before us. Give us humility and a willingness to serve you in whatever way you call us. Amen.
