In 1 Samuel chapter 25, we read about a wealthy but ill-tempered man named Nabal who lived in Carmel. David and his men had protected Nabal's shepherds and flocks. When Nabal was shearing his sheep (a time of celebration and generosity), David sent messengers to ask for a customary provision of food for his men. However, Nabal responded with harsh insults and refused David's request.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Describe Nabal based on the information provided in the chapter. What was his reputation?
  2. Why did David feel it was appropriate to ask Nabal for provisions? What had David and his men done for Nabal?
  3. How did Nabal respond to David's messengers? What was the tone and content of his reply?
  4. How did David react to Nabal's insults and refusal? What did he plan to do?
  5. How did Abigail, Nabal's wife, intervene in this situation? What did she do and say to David?
  6. What qualities did Abigail demonstrate in her actions and words? Why do you think David listened to her?
  7. What ultimately happened to Nabal? How did the Lord intervene?
  8. What does this story teach us about the importance of kindness, generosity, and humility? How does it warn us against foolishness and pride?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, we see in this chapter the contrast between foolishness and wisdom, and the importance of treating others with respect. Help us to be generous and kind in our dealings with others, and to avoid the pride and harshness that characterized Nabal. Thank you for examples like Abigail, who showed wisdom and humility. May we learn from this story and always strive to honor you in our words and actions. Amen.
