King Solomon's Wise Request

Review:

After King David's death, his son Solomon was established on the throne. In 1 Kings chapter 3, we read about Solomon's early reign and a pivotal moment that revealed his heart and pleased God. At Gibeon, Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings to the Lord. In a dream, God appeared to Solomon and invited him to ask for anything he desired. Instead of asking for long life, riches, or victory over his enemies, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God's people.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What did Solomon do at Gibeon? What does this act of worship tell us about his initial heart towards God?
  2. What did God offer Solomon in the dream? How would you have responded if God asked you what you wanted?
  3. What did Solomon ask for, and why? What does his request reveal about his priorities?
  4. How did God react to Solomon's request? What additional blessings did God promise Solomon because of his wise choice?
  5. What does this story teach us about the importance of choosing wisdom over other worldly desires?
  6. Describe the famous case that demonstrated Solomon's wisdom (the two women and the baby). How did he use the wisdom God gave him to discern the truth?
  7. How can we seek wisdom in our daily lives? Where can we find true wisdom?
  8. What are some "worldly desires" that might distract us from seeking God's wisdom?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the story of King Solomon and his wise request. We confess that often our hearts are drawn to things like wealth, power, or popularity, but this story reminds us of the far greater value of wisdom. Please grant us, like Solomon, a discerning heart to govern your people and to live wisely in your sight. Help us to prioritize spiritual wisdom above all else, trusting that when we seek you first, all other good things will follow. Amen.
