In the previous study, we learned how God spoke to young Samuel and revealed his plans concerning Eli's family. As Samuel grew, the Lord was with him, and his words proved true. The Philistines were eventually defeated with God's help. For a time, there was peace in the land, and Samuel faithfully served as a judge, traveling throughout Israel. However, as Samuel grew old, his sons did not follow his righteous ways, leading the elders of Israel to demand a king.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did the elders of Israel want a king? What reasons did they give to Samuel?
  2. How did Samuel feel about their request? Why was he displeased?
  3. What was God's response to Samuel's concern? What did God say was the real reason behind their request?
  4. What warnings did Samuel give the people about having a king? What were some of the potential downsides he described?
  5. Despite Samuel's warnings, the people insisted on having a king. What does this tell us about their desires and priorities at this time?
  6. Have you ever wanted something so badly that you ignored warnings or potential negative consequences?
  7. In what ways do we sometimes reject God's leadership in our own lives and try to take control?
  8. What can we learn from this story about trusting God's plan for our lives, even when it looks different from what we expect or desire?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for this story of Israel's desire for a king. Help us to examine our own hearts and ensure that our desires align with your will for our lives. Forgive us when we are tempted to reject your guidance and seek our own way. Grant us the wisdom to trust in your perfect plan and the humility to follow your leading, knowing that your ways are always best. Amen.
