After Saul was anointed king, Israel faced a powerful enemy: the Philistines. Their army gathered for battle, and a giant of a man named Goliath came out to challenge the Israelites. He was a fearsome warrior, much taller and stronger than any of them, and he taunted them daily, demanding that they send out a man to fight him.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Describe Goliath based on what you read. What details made him so intimidating?
  2. How did the Israelite army react to Goliath's challenge? Why do you think they were so afraid?
  3. Have you ever faced a challenge that seemed too big for you? How did you feel?
  4. Why do you think Goliath kept taunting the Israelites day after day? What was his goal?
  5. What does this part of the story teach us about fear and how it can affect us?
  6. In what ways do we face "giants" in our lives today? These could be problems, difficult situations, or even negative thoughts.

Prayer:

Dear God, we thank you for this story and how it shows us the reality of fear. When we face challenges that seem overwhelming, help us to remember that you are bigger than any giant we might face. Give us courage and strength in those moments. Amen.
