Yesterday, we were introduced to Hannah, a woman who prayed fervently for a child. God answered her prayer, and she dedicated her son Samuel to the Lord's service at the tabernacle in Shiloh. Samuel grew up in the care of Eli, the high priest. While Samuel faithfully served God, Eli's own sons were wicked and disregarded God's laws.
Discussion Questions:
- What do we learn about Samuel's character in these chapters? How is he described?
- Contrast Samuel's behavior with that of Eli's sons. What were the consequences of their actions?
- Describe the scene where God speaks to Samuel for the first time. Why do you think Samuel didn't recognize God's voice at first?
- How did Eli help Samuel understand who was calling him? What does this teach us about the importance of wise guidance?
- What message did God give to Samuel about Eli and his family? How do you think Samuel felt about having to deliver this message?
- The Bible says Samuel "continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people." What do you think contributed to this growth?
- Have you ever felt God speaking to you in a specific way? How did you recognize it?
- How can we become better at listening for God's voice in our lives today?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for the story of young Samuel and how you spoke to him. Help us to have ears that are open to your voice and hearts that are willing to obey your commands. Give us wisdom to discern your guidance and courage to follow it, even when it is difficult. May we grow in our love for you and in favor with those around us, just as Samuel did. Amen.
