After becoming king, David remembered his covenant with Jonathan, Saul's son. He inquired if any of Saul's descendants were still alive so that he could show them kindness for Jonathan's sake. He learned of Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who was lame. David brought Mephibosheth to his palace and restored to him all the land of Saul, and Mephibosheth ate at David's table as one of his own sons.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did David inquire about Saul's descendants? What motivated him to seek them out?
  2. Describe Mephibosheth's situation. What were his physical challenges, and what was his family background?
  3. How did Mephibosheth react when he was summoned by David? What does his response reveal about his expectations?
  4. What did David do for Mephibosheth? What did this act of kindness symbolize?
  5. What does this story teach us about keeping promises and honoring relationships?
  6. How does David's kindness to Mephibosheth reflect God's grace and mercy towards us?
  7. In what ways can we show kindness and generosity to others, especially those who might be vulnerable or in need?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank you for the example of David's kindness and faithfulness. Help us to remember the importance of keeping our promises and showing compassion to others, especially those who may be overlooked or forgotten. May we be inspired by David's generosity to extend your grace to those around us. Amen.
