After becoming king, David remembered his covenant with Jonathan, Saul's son. He inquired if any of Saul's descendants were still alive so that he could show them kindness for Jonathan's sake. He learned of Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who was lame. David brought Mephibosheth to his palace and restored to him all the land of Saul, and Mephibosheth ate at David's table as one of his own sons.
