Following the previous encounter where David spared Saul's life in the cave, Saul temporarily returned home. However, he soon resumed his pursuit of David, once again driven by jealousy and fear. In 1 Samuel chapter 26, Saul and his army camped for the night, unaware that David and Abishai were watching them. David had yet another opportunity to kill Saul but, true to his character, refused to harm the Lord's anointed.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How did David discover Saul's location in chapter 26? Who went with him into Saul's camp?
  2. What did Abishai propose to David when they found Saul sleeping? What was his reasoning?
  3. Why did David forbid Abishai from striking Saul? What principle guided his decision?
  4. What did David take from Saul's camp as proof that he had been there? What message was he trying to send?
  5. How did David awaken Saul and his commander Abner? What did he say to them?
  6. How did Saul react this time when he realized David had spared him again? Did his attitude seem to change?
  7. What does this repeated act of restraint by David teach us about patience, trusting God, and resisting revenge?
  8. In what ways can we apply David's example in our own lives when we feel wronged or have opportunities to get even with someone?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, we are continually amazed by David's unwavering respect for your authority and his refusal to take matters into his own hands. Help us to cultivate that same level of trust and patience. When we are tempted to retaliate or seek revenge, remind us of David's example and empower us to choose the path of righteousness, trusting in your perfect timing and justice. Amen.
