After becoming king of Israel, David desired to bring the Ark of the Covenant, the symbol of God's presence, to Jerusalem. Chapter 6 of 2 Samuel describes the joyous procession as the Ark was brought into the city. David, filled with joy and worship, danced before the Ark with all his might. However, his wife Michal criticized his behavior, seeing it as undignified for a king.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Describe the scene as the Ark of the Covenant was being brought to Jerusalem. What actions did David take to show his reverence and joy?
  2. Why do you think David felt it was appropriate for him to dance before the Lord in this way, even though he was king?
  3. What was Michal's reaction to David's dancing? Why did she criticize him? What does this reveal about her perspective?
  4. How did David respond to Michal's criticism? What was the basis of his reply?
  5. What does this story teach us about different ways of expressing worship and devotion to God? Is there a "right" way to worship?
  6. Why do you think David prioritized pleasing God over the opinions of others, even his own wife?
  7. How can we ensure that our expressions of worship come from a genuine heart and are not just for show?
  8. Have you ever felt moved to express your joy or faith in a way that others might not understand? How did you respond?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the example of King David, who worshipped you with such passion and joy. Help us to cultivate hearts that are unreserved in their devotion to you. May we always prioritize pleasing you above the opinions of others and express our love for you in ways that are authentic and heartfelt. Forgive us for times when we have been critical or judgmental of others' expressions of faith. Amen.
